Constructionlab Ltd. traces its roots back to 2013. Adult continuing professional development (CPD) in the Canadian construction sector was in a state of infancy in Canada at that time. Choices to upskill, or side skill were limited to a return to expensive post-secondary institutions. The firm was formed to alter that trend, and provide organized curriculum supporting CPD for Canadian professionals already working in construction management roles. Our early work included in-class delivery of courses designed by us as well as the Canadian Construction Association and BuildForce Canada.
Constructionlab, the name of the firm was formalized in 2017. Growth over the previous 4 years, through dedication and hard work building a service to industry began to stabilize and clients and industry partners began to prioritize professional development recognizing it returned value for investment. The firm's client list grew by 600% from 2016 to 2019 adding partners in 2 provinces in addition to Ontario. Curriculum design and broader learning and development consulting services were added in 2019 with a commission by Confederation College to deliver training in First Nations communities.
As with many service based businesses, 2020 was a year of transformation for the firm, moving from in-class delivery of courses and workshops, to on-line LIVE facilitator led courses and workshops. Constructionlab was formally incorporated in March 2020, and Virtual Chalk TM was created to deliver training on-line. In 2022, JOBSITE The Board Game TM series of fun and educational games were introduced with copyrights granted in Canada and the USA. Today, a return to in-class training with additional consulting engagements places Constructionlab as a leader in learning innovation and delivery across Canada.
Constructionlab's current workbook across 3 business units looks strong heading into 2023. In the fall of 2022 we will complete a guide to procurement best practices for the Construction and Design Alliance of Ontario. As we demonstrate continued growth and flexibility, we will deliver a brand new course for a provincial labour relations leadership group, developing 20 plus hours of content. JOBSITE The Board Game, our unique one-of-a kind construction and design educational product series is growing in sales volume each month and our in-class and on-line facilitation services remain strong and growing as our core business revenue. In the fall of 2022 we welcome 4 new construction association clients elevating our reach in 2 more provinces for a total of 6 provinces served across Canada. In 2023, we will be building a new program called After The Tools - aimed at supporting workers choosing to work longer in life, transitioning to management or desiring to run trade businesses.

" Hi Derek, Thanks for all the content over the past few days. There was a lot of beneficial information relevant to both work and home life that I can take away from this course. Thanks again, and hopefully our paths will cross again."

"Derek is an outstanding course author and facilitator. He creates a learning environment where students not only gain from his vast personal knowledge and experience, but also through specifically structured simulations that provoke high level reflection and critical thinking skills for course participants. Having now hired Derek to deliver 5 different construction industry courses, I cannot recommend him enough."

About Construction 101 and Beyond
“Just a quick note to say that some of my staff, including my manager of Construction, attended the OCA’s Construction 101 training on November 21st and 22nd. I had an opportunity to get their feedback and the course was described as nothing short of amazing. They had a lot of positive comments on the material and the instructor. In fact, I have received nothing but positive feedback"

About the Founding of Canada BIM Council
"As with all projects that we have worked together, and especially in the case of the Canada BIM Council (CANBIM) experience, I found that he conducted himself in a professional manner and with great integrity as you would expect of any business leader. The vision was exciting but the task challenging and Derek was the perfect leader to take it on. Derek's passion, effort, focus and time invested to get it started was truly amazing and the achievement significant. Our industry was changed for the better and because of his vision, Building Information Modeling evolved into a major driving force in our industry"
